Online users usually scan (or speed read) the contents on web site hence the path way that people almost read the information on screen is F-shaped pattern (F for fast).
First people read in a horizontal movement then move downwards and read in a second horizontal movement. Finally users scan the information on the left side in a vertical movement.
Sometimes people will read the information in an E-shaped pattern or L-shaped with the crossbar at the top. However F-shaped pattern is the most common pathway that people read on screen.
This is an interesting set of information that Jakob Nielsen has presented. It is an valuable information that help students to design web pages as well as other forms of electronic publication correctly.
